Wander the Old Road Between Gardiner and Mammoth

Hike/snowshoe (depending on the season) along the washed-out road along the Gardner River. In 2022, flooding washed out the entrance road between Gardiner, Montana, and Mammoth Hot Springs. Today, you can wander the old road past to a breathtaking washout. Along this five-mile trek, you’ll see the devastation of the 2022 floods, as well as a chance to see bison, elk, and maybe even bighorn sheep!

We will meet for this adventure near the post office in Mammoth. Snowshoes will be provided if needed!

Overview

We will start the tour at the famous Roosevelt Arch in Gardiner, Montana. From there, we will walk on the sidewalk past the park infrastructure buildings before putting on our snowshoes and walking the old road. We will see firsthand how the Gardner River was impacted from the 2022 floods, look for wildlife, and then witness the destruction caused by the torrent of water that closed the road in June of 2022.

Itinerary

Day 1:
What to expect

A walk in the snow, past bison and elk, along the washed out road that connected Gardiner, Montana to Mammoth Hot Springs in the park.

Cost includes snowshoes

  • Snowshoes will be provided, as well as use of binoculars.

Nothing more will be provided

  • Snacks, backpacks and water will need to be brought on your own.
